Sheboygan Northern Bluff Stabilization Project

Sheboygan Northern Bluff Stabilization Project

In collaboration with the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Stantec, and the City of Sheboygan, LNRP is undertaking efforts to restore stability to the northern section of the bluff along Lake Michigan Shoreline.

In the beginning phase, five alternatives for the project area were created, with four focusing on the bluff itself. The fifth alternative considers beach fill at North Point Beach to enhance recreational opportunities while also supporting bluff stabilization. These alternatives were then presented & discussed during public meetings to gain feedback.

Funding is currently secured to advance through the 30% design phase, led by the Stantec team.

Multiple grant applications have been submitted, and efforts will continue to pursue grant support through to construction, supplemented by city contributions and potential private funding. The inclusion of a public-use trail is anticipated to broaden the scope of potential grants, as it promotes increased utilization.

This project is situated on public land. It is important to note that some areas between the project's overall scope are privately owned. A visual representation of the project boundaries, distinguishing between public and private properties, is available for review on the right.

Bluff Alternatives

For clarity, Alternatives 1 and 3 share similarities, including toe protection and riprap; however, Alternative 3 incorporates a multi-use trail. Similarly, Alternatives 2 and 4 both feature toe protection and a vegetative turf reinforcement mat, with Alternative 4 additionally including a multi-use trail. Alternatives 2 & 4 were chosen by the community for the preferred design, and has continued into the 30% design phase.
